One of the most awaited festivities in Sycamore Terrace Apartments in Temecula and the whole of United States is the Independence Day on the fourth of July. It is an annual celebration with parades, fireworks displays, and other fun activities all over the country. Aside from commemorating this day with our friends and loved ones, it is also essential to understand the history behind it.
The 4th of July
Every fourth of July, we remember the declaration of our independence from the British Empire. It was on July 4, 1776 when the Congress released the signed declaration of the freedom of the 13 New England colonies which had been established by Britain. These colonies are composed of Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts Bay, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Providence Plantations, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Virginia.
These states used to be British agricultural colonies since 1587. Although the relationship between the natives and their colonizer had been harmonious, tension started rising due to issues on laws and taxes. In 1765, some natives began craving for representations, calling for “no taxation without representation.” Numerous protests and violent acts followed.
In 1775, the Continental Congress, composed of representatives from the 13 colonies declared war against Britain. The following year, 56 representatives from the said states—including Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson—signed the declaration of the 13 colonies as “self-styled states.”
